Avram,

Thanks for your clarity and passion. As a member of the group that has been trying to get a tough Energy Futures Resolution passed by the General Assembly for a couple of years now, I share your disappointment that we could not get the backing of several environmental groups. "Realism" in politics often leads to big giveaways and loss of power. I think the environmental movement suffered a big defeat with the passage of S3.
Nothing about our energy future is set in stone as yet, and we will continue to educate the public and form stronger coalitions amoung citizen groups to prevent any new nuclear and coal power plants from being constructed.
I do think, however, that framing our position in "economic" terms only will prevent us from gathering the largest possible constituency. In the end, our energy future is a moral/ethical issue. I beleive we must speak to people's hearts and souls and not just to their pocketbooks.
In solidarity

Cudo's to you for your clarity of thought and wisdom about the political process.
The news is bleak - we are on course to NOT respond adequately to the rapidly rising levels of CO2 in our atmosphere. Citizen democracy needs to lead the way to a saner world.
I urge our readers to join the Canary Coalition (www.canarycoalition.org), read the updates, and become citizen activists.
